Who is a woman who has shaped your life and career in dermatology? Hear stories from our experts as we celebrate Women's History Month 2026.

In honor of Women’s History Month, dermatologists across the field are taking a moment to recognize the women who have shaped not only their careers, but also their lives. Throughout March, Dermatology Times asked our experts to share some stories and tributes to women who have inspired them. From mothers and mentors to colleagues and loved ones, these women are not only part of the journey; it’s clear that women have and continue to shape the field of dermatology and the people within it.

For many, that influence begins at home. Harrison Nguyen, MD, MBA, MPH, FAAD, honored his mother as his hero and lifelong inspiration, while also recognizing his fiancée as a constant source of support behind his professional success. Similarly, Anthony Rossi, MD, FAAD, FACMS, reflected on his sister and mother, an Italian immigrant and entrepreneur, whose lessons in hard work and open-mindedness continue to guide him. Nicholas Brownstone, MD, echoed this sentiment, crediting his mother for instilling core values like empathy and the importance of family, while also giving a shoutout to all female dermatologists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.

Others pointed to formative mentors and role models. Lisa Swanson, MD, FAAD, credited her childhood dermatologist with inspiring her career path, while also drawing motivation from cultural figures like Leslie Knope and Betty White. Faranak Kamangar, MD, FAAD, highlighted Kathy Fields, MD, as a mentor who exemplifies ethical practice and an unwavering commitment to patient care. Darrell Rigel, MD, MS, recalled the profound influence of his childhood neighbor, coach, and mentor, a pioneering thoracic surgeon who helped shape his early interest in medicine and left him with a lasting philosophy: to be not just a doctor, but a physician.

Family also remained a central theme in unique ways. Doris Day, MD, FAAD, shared her admiration for her daughter, now a dermatology resident, whose insight and compassion have guided her throughout her own career. Diego Ruiz Dasilva, MD, FAAD, recognized his wife, a veterinarian, for continually pushing him to grow and excel. Finally, Michael O’Donoghue, MD, offered a moving tribute to his late mother, Marianne O’Donoghue, MD, a dermatology leader and former president of multiple professional organizations, whose legacy continues to influence him daily.
