Dermatology Times Inaugural NP/PA Connect Cutaneous Oncology Workshop Kicks Off in Tampa

Today, Dermatology Times kicks off its inaugural NP/PA Cutaneous Oncology Workshop: Empowering Advanced Practice Providers in Cutaneous Oncology in Tampa, Florida, bringing dermatology clinicians together for a full day of practical, multidisciplinary education focused on skin cancer care.

The September 12 event marks the first Cutaneous Oncology Workshop hosted by Dermatology Times and is designed specifically to support advanced practice providers (APPs) as their roles continue to expand across the prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of cutaneous malignancies.

Throughout the day, attendees will engage with expert-led presentations, case-based discussions, interactive education, and hands-on training covering topics across the cutaneous oncology care continuum.

Starting With Prevention and Early Detection

The workshop begins with a focus on preventing and recognizing skin cancer. Sessions will explore evidence surrounding photoprotection, practical approaches to managing actinic keratoses, and hereditary syndromes associated with increased skin cancer risk.

Attendees will also take part in an interactive dermoscopy primer focused on distinguishing benign from malignant lesions, incorporating clinical images and live polling to put diagnostic skills into practice.

The morning program will then transition from the classroom to hands-on education with a 2-hour suturing laboratory. Faculty-guided training will allow attendees to practice several closure techniques, including simple interrupted, cross mattress, running, and subcuticular interrupted sutures.

Navigating Diagnosis, Staging, and Treatment

As the program moves into the afternoon, faculty will explore the diagnosis and staging of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma.

Sessions will address clinical and histologic features of these malignancies, surgical decision-making with Mohs surgery and wide local excision, staging systems, and the evolving role of molecular and laboratory testing in cutaneous oncology.

Treatment-focused discussions will then examine an increasingly complex therapeutic landscape, including adjuvant immunotherapy, immune checkpoint inhibitors, radiation therapy, and emerging approaches that may shape clinical practice in 2026 and beyond.

Faculty will also discuss the recognition and management of cutaneous immune-related adverse events, an important consideration as immunotherapies become increasingly integrated into cancer care.

Bringing Cutaneous Oncology Education Into Practice

Faculty for the inaugural workshop include chair of the program Tristan Hasbargen, PA-C; Amit Om, MD; Amy Spizuoco, DO, FAOCD; and Angad Chadha, MD, who will share perspectives from across dermatology and oncology throughout the program.

The day will conclude with a multidisciplinary panel focused on collaboration, care coordination, and questions from attendees, bringing together lessons from across the workshop.

By combining clinical updates with case-based and hands-on education, the inaugural Cutaneous Oncology Workshop aims to provide APPs with strategies they can apply to the care of patients with or at risk for skin cancer.
