At the 2024 SDPA Fall Conference, Sara Wilchowski, DMSc, MPAS, PA-C, highlighted the challenges and rewards of transitioning to industry roles, the impact of “Insta-Tok” on patient care, and the evolving landscape of dermatology.

“I cannot stress enough to collaborate with your current MSLs, because it not only helps you understand the role, but it helps you to better serve your patients,” said Sara Wilchowski, DMSc, MPAS, PA-C, in an interview with Dermatology Times at the 2024 Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) Fall Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Wilchowski, a board-certified physician associate and a medical science liaison in Detroit, Michigan, presented “The Ins and Outs of Being an MSL” and “Strategic Supplement Strategies for the Derm PA” at the 22nd annual conference. In her interview, Wilchowski also discussed the crucial role of SDPA in providing comprehensive education to its members, as well as upcoming dermatology innovations in 2025.

Wilchowski’s Highlights

1. Transitioning From Clinical Practice to Industry Roles

Wilchowski detailed her personal journey from clinical dermatology to working as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) in the pharmaceutical industry. This transition, while rewarding, comes with challenges and adjustments. She highlighted that aspiring MSLs must prepare for significant travel, a factor heavily dependent on the company’s size and regional coverage. Smaller teams often mean more extensive travel. However, the flexibility to manage one’s schedule and opportunities for professional growth are notable advantages. Wilchowski emphasized the importance of engaging with current MSLs to gain a clear understanding of the role before making the leap. Collaborating with MSLs also enhances clinical practice, as it bridges the gap between clinical and pharmaceutical advancements.

2. The Role of Clinicians in Navigating “Insta-Tok” Patient Education

The influx of health information from platforms such as Instagram and TikTok ("Insta-Tok" as Wilchowski calls it) has transformed patient interactions. Wilchowski underscored the need for dermatology clinicians to stay informed about both pharmaceutical and nutraceutical interventions. For instance, she delved into the intricacies of prescribing vitamin D. Acknowledging it as a pleiotropic prohormone, not just a vitamin, she explained the critical need for pairing it with magnesium and vitamin K2. This ensures optimal calcium absorption and prevents potential adverse effects such as muscle cramps or bone density loss. By understanding such details, clinicians can effectively counter misinformation and empower patients with accurate guidance.

3. The Value of the SDPA Community

As a long-time advocate for the SDPA, Wilchowski praised its role in advancing education tailored to dermatology physician associates and nurse practitioners. Having served as a committee chair and board member, she emphasized SDPA’s responsiveness to its members’ evolving needs. The organization prioritizes high-quality, relevant content, shaped by member feedback from conference evaluations. Wilchowski expressed pride in SDPA’s mission, noting its commitment to delivering practical and innovative education. She encouraged participation and collaboration within the dermatology physician associate community to further professional growth.

4. The Expanding Dermatology Armamentarium

The dermatology field is experiencing a renaissance in treatment innovation. Wilchowski celebrated the rapid development of biologics, small molecules, and advanced topical formulations. This expanding armamentarium allows clinicians to personalize treatment plans, moving beyond older mechanisms of action. She stressed the importance of staying informed about new treatments in the pipeline and sharing knowledge to enhance patient care. Mentorship and collaboration among peers are essential for navigating these advancements and ensuring patients receive the best possible outcomes.

Wilchowski’s insights reflect her passion for bridging clinical and industry expertise to benefit both dermatology clinicians and their patients. Her emphasis on continuous education, peer collaboration, and adapting to the changing landscape underscores the dynamic nature of modern dermatology.
