Key Takeaways

  • Two granted patents (US 12,458,675; US 12,605,417) cover compositions and methods underlying Bia and Antü product lines for atopic dermatitis management.
  • Mechanistic positioning centers on increasing filaggrin to improve barrier integrity while supporting microbiome preservation, addressing steroid-related concerns such as skin thinning with chronic use.

The patented filaggrin-targeting regimen claims up to 99% atopic dermatitis relief without steroids, boosting hydration and calming itch in adults.

Today, Codex Labs announced that it has secured 2 US patents covering its BiaComplex eczema treatment technology in adult patients with atopic dermatitis (AD).1 The patents are supported by 2 peer-reviewed clinical studies published in the Journal of Integrative Dermatology, demonstrating up to a 99% reduction in eczema severity without the use of topical corticosteroids. The patents protect the compositions and treatment methods behind BiaComplex and BiaComplex 2.0, which serve as the foundation for the company’s Bia and Antü product lines.

The BiaComplex Technology

Topical corticosteroids remain a standard treatment option for the 31 million Americans diagnosed with AD. But long-term use can raise concerns related to skin thinning and limitations on chronic application. The BiaComplex technology targets filaggrin, a structural protein involved in skin barrier integrity that is often reduced in eczema-prone skin.

“For too long, families managing eczema have faced a tradeoff between effective relief and the long-term concerns of steroid use — especially for children, where those concerns weigh heaviest,” said Barbara Paldus, PhD, founder and CEO of Codex Labs. “These two patents represent years of work to address eczema at its biological root, and the clinical evidence behind them shows what we hoped: that rigorous science and accessible care don't have to be at odds. The parents up at 3 a.m. with a child who cannot stop scratching deserve solutions built on real science, not just marketing.”1

According to the company, the patented formulations, which feature biotech-derived plant actives, were developed to increase filaggrin production while supporting restoration of the skin barrier and preservation of the skin microbiome. Codex’s treatment approach combines topical products with an oral supplement regimen intended to address barrier function from an “inside-out” approach. US Patent No. 12,458,675 was granted in November 2025, and US Patent No. 12,605,417 was granted in April 2026.

Open-Label SCORAD Reductions

The first clinical study, conducted in Poland by Eurofins Dermscan/Pharmascan, evaluated adult patients with mild to moderate eczema using the Bia Eczema Relief Lotion together with the Bia Unscented Soap over an 8-week period.2 Investigators reported that participants experienced a 99% reduction in total SCORAD, which is commonly used to assess eczema severity. The mean baseline SCORAD was 29.8 at the beginning of the study. No topical corticosteroids were used during the trial.

Additional findings included:

  • A 78% increase in skin hydration in affected areas
  • A 40% reduction in transepidermal water loss
  • Resolution of itch in 79% of participants by week 8

Improvement with Combination Therapy

A second open-label clinical trial evaluated the same topical regimen combined with the Antü Skin Barrier Support Supplement, described as an antioxidant-enhanced L-histidine formulation.3 The study included 35 adult patients with moderate eczema and a mean baseline SCORAD of 34.6.

After 8 weeks of treatment, investigators observed:

  • A 93% reduction in total SCORAD
  • A 97% reduction in pruritus
  • A 117% increase in skin hydration

By week 8, 91% of participants reported complete resolution of itch. As in the first study, no topical corticosteroids were used during treatment.

Certification Profile

In April 2025, the Bia Eczema Relief Lotion became the first over-the-counter eczema topical product to receive both the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance and Microbiome-Friendly Certification from MyMicrobiome.4 The Bia product line is approved for use in infants as young as 3 weeks old.

“So many patients and families are looking for ways to support eczema-prone skin beyond topical steroids. The focus on filaggrin, skin barrier repair, and microbiome-conscious care makes this approach especially compelling. It is so exciting to see patented technology paired with emerging clinical evidence aimed at addressing eczema from multiple angles all at once,” said Peter Lio, MD, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Northwestern University and co-author of the published clinical studies.1
