Creating Goals Ahead of Psoriasis Action Month

The 2022 Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA) Conference starts November 17th and ends November 20th in Miami, Florida. Renata Block, MMS, PA-C, talked with 

and discussed the conference's importance to physician assistants and what she's looking forward to the most.

 Hi, my name is Renata Block. I'm a physician assistant based in Chicago, Illinois. I am proud to be coming to the SDPA conference because it is a conference curated by our members, meaning we listen to what the members want. And it is created by Derm PA's by Derm PA's. So this conference is exciting, because we have that inaugural cosmetics workshop, which we have been working on for the past couple of years, and it finally came to fruition. We also have something called tracks, so depending on where you are in your practice, whether you're advanced Derm or you want to have the foundational basics, or you want cosmetics or professional development, you get to choose the course that you want to take based on your needs. I'm also looking forward to palliative dermatology and the quality of life for our patients. Our director is Dr. Ted Rosen and he always has just amazing lectures and information about infectious diseases.  So we're going to be talking about anti-infectious mechanisms and how we can treat our patients moving forward. This year in Miami, we have something called the townhall where we have the NCCPA the AAPA and of course, the SDPA meeting and answering questions from our members and really encouraging them to step up and use their voices and really let the public know of how much we contribute to patient care. What differences we are making to the country's healthcare? We are learning that 98 million people are unable to get access to health care. This is a perfect opportunity for dermatology pas to get involved and make a difference and be able to give these people the health care that is needed.

The Importance of SDPA Fall Conference for Physician Assistants

At the 2022 Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants conference in Miami, Florida, Shanna Miranti, MPAS, board-certified physician assistant at Riverchase Dermatology in Naples, Florida, presented her updates on acne mimickers during the “Kodachromes” session. Miranti spoke alongside fellow colleagues Ted Rosen, MD, professor and vice-chair of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas; Cynthia Trickett, MPAS, board-certified physician assistant at North Dallas Dermatology Associates in Dallas, Texas; and Matthew Zirwas, MD, FAAD, and founder of the Bexley Dermatology Research Clinic in Bexley, Ohio.

“My particular segment was on acne mimickers. These are things that can trip us up in everyday practice. So, I want you to be on the lookout for those acne mimickers. If your treatments that you know should be working are not working, then it's really either one of two things, either your patients are not being compliant, or it may not be acne,” said Miranti.

So, for the “Kodachromes” lecture, I hope you enjoyed a very exciting panel on some fun and interesting topics. Dr. Ted Rosen, who is the medical director of the SDPA, Miami, myself, Shannon Miranti, Cynthia Trickett, and Dr. Matt Zirwas were up on stage giving you some really exciting cases. Hopefully, you were stimulated, hopefully, you had to think a little bit. But hopefully, you will be able to take away from "Kodachromes,” some tips and techniques that you can bring back to your practice. My particular segment was on acne mimickers. These are things that can trip us up in everyday practice. So, I want you to be on the lookout for those acne mimickers. If your treatments that you know should be working are not working, then it's really either one of two things, either your patients are not being compliant, or it may not be acne. So, think beyond the horses in the room, look to find those zebras, and that will help you succeed in the future and in treating your patients.

Updates on Psoriasis and Related Comorbidities 

At the 2022 Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants Conference in Miami, Florida, Shanna Miranti, MPAS, board-certified physician assistant at Riverchase Dermatology in Naples, Florida, presented updates on treating pediatric patients during her session, “Treating ‘Warts and Molluscum and Kiddos... Oh MY!’” Miranti’s presentation included:

“A couple of highlights from this lecture would have been going beyond cryotherapy and trying to figure out some other alternatives when our kiddos are very scared or when they do not want to be treated with liquid nitrogen,” said Miranti.

As Miranti mentions, liquid nitrogen for warts is not for all pediatric patients. If physicians encounter scared pediatric patients, they can choose from non-invasive and kid-friendly treatment options such as salicylic acid, cantharidin, squaric acid di-butyl ester, or SwiftMicrowave Therapy.

Miranti’s next presentation, “Kodachromes,” takes place on November 29th at 11:30am EST. Miranti will be presenting alongside fellow colleagues Ted Rosen, MD; Cynthia Trickett, MPAS, PA-C; and Matthew Zirwas, MD, FAAD.

My first talk this year at SDPA, Miami is entitled “Treating “Warts and Molluscum and Kiddos... Oh MY!’” This is certainly a fun and exciting kind of adventure into the field of pediatric dermatology. I myself am the mother of four children. So not only do I love seeing kids, but I have a lot of kids at home. But it can be very tricky to decide how to treat kiddos when they come into our office. So, I hope you learned a little bit today regarding some treatment options and some alternatives to cryotherapy. A couple of highlights from this lecture would have been going beyond cryotherapy and trying to figure out some other alternatives when our kiddos are very scared or when they do not want to be treated with liquid nitrogen. In addition to that, we have some very exciting new therapies coming out for molluscum. The first FDA-approved treatment options for molluscum contagiosum will be coming to the market in 2023. So, I introduced some new and exciting therapies today. Then finally just capping it off: how to treat kiddos when they're scared. What are some options for mitigating that fear and helping them stay brave when we do have to do procedures on kids. I hope you enjoyed the lecture on this pediatric dermatology adventure and hope you will consider seeing more kids in your practice in the future.
