"Beauty is something that we all recognize, but it's very difficult to define," says Dr. Shamban who used The 2018 Winter Olympics as an opportunity to compare and contrast international standards of facial beauty.
Solutions for estrogen-deficient skin
“[Patients] associate symptoms such as night sweats and difficulty sleeping with menopause. After menopause, skin loses estrogen and, subsequently, estrogen receptors on skin cells such as fibroblasts… Estrogen binding those receptors is responsible for plumping the skin, stimulating the development of glycosaminoglycans, which improve hydration, and also stimulating new collagen and elastin. The loss of that interaction leads to the clinical signs of dryness and wrinkling,” says Dr. Berson, who presented “A New Cosmeceutical for Estrogen Deficient Skin” at the American Academy of Dermatology’s (AAD) 2019 spring meeting in Washington, D.C.
A novel formulation for investigational botulinum toxin A
“It is an innovation in aesthetics because this is the first botulinum toxin type A that comes in a liquid formulation,” says Joel Cohen, M.D., director of AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery in Colorado, and investigator in the phase 2 clinical trial.
“You rely on about a half a millimeter gap between the tip of the probe on the skin and you’re using [the] device to ionize the air in that space to create plasma and then you see a little arc and the arc is what’s hitting the skin and causing something called sublimation,” Dev Patel, BSc(Hons) MB BS Dip IMC RCS(ed) DFFP DPD(Dermatology) MRCGP DOccMed, Portsmouth, England, explains.
Diversity in medical aesthetics
“I may not have had any female mentors early in my career, but I am certainly inspired by the younger women coming up,” Mary Lynn Moran, M.D., F.A.C.S., says. “Being able to represent them at the leadership level as well as the rest of my esteemed male colleagues is such an honor.”
“CBD has shown anti-inflammatory effects when topically applied. It can reduce the symptoms of psoriasis, eczema and other inflammatory skin disorders,” says Sam Dhatt, Founder and CEO of Dermaquest, in a CBD Q&A provided by the company.
Achieving the ideal male aesthetic
“When addressing a male upper eyelid [for example], you don't remove as much skin because you don't want to feminize the eye… a fuller upper eyelid is a very sexy characteristic in a male. Maintaining that is something that we try to do,” says Michael Somenek, M.D., Washington D.C.
“She taught me so much in this journey, but to see her joy at seeing her features, which weren't classic female, but we're somewhere along that way, was so inspiring,” Doris Day, M.D., New York City, says.
The future of skin resurfacing
“I liken resurfacing to aerating your lawn - punching little holes in the tissue,” she says. Visible results include new surface skin, with collagen and elastin formation at deeper levels. Laser success requires picking the right type of laser for the right indication in the right patient to get the right results, says Dr. Van Dyke, who presented on this topic at the Fall 2018 Cosmetic Bootcamp.
