In an interview with Dermatology Times, Christina Weng, MD, and Daniel Gil, PhD, discussed PP405, a novel topical therapy for alopecia that aims to regenerate hair by reactivating dormant hair follicle stem cells. Unlike existing treatments that mainly slow hair loss or improve hair thickness, PP405 targets the underlying biology of hair growth by stimulating inactive follicles to re-enter the growth phase. Early phase 2a data showed increased follicular unit activation and terminal hair growth with a favorable safety profile and no systemic absorption. With further trials planned, PP405 could represent a shift toward regenerative, mechanism-based treatment for hair loss in both men and women.
2. Dermocosmetic Cream Shows Early Acne Improvement in Skin of Color
A small exploratory study in adults with acne vulgaris and darker skin phototypes (Fitzpatrick types IV-VI) found that a multitargeted dermocosmetic cream may improve both acne lesions and acne-induced hyperpigmentation, a common and often more distressing sequela in patients with skin of color. In a split-face design, the treated side showed earlier and greater reductions in total and inflammatory lesions, along with significant improvements in hyperpigmentation intensity over 57 days compared with an untreated control. Although the number of pigmentary lesions did not change, their severity decreased, and tolerability was favorable. These findings suggest that dermocosmetics may play a useful adjunctive role in managing both inflammation and pigmentary changes in this population, though larger studies are needed.
