PODCAST: Navigating Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Featuring Albert Yan, MD, FAAP, FAAD

Albert Yan, MD, FAAP, FAAD, research director at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, professor at the Perelman School of Medicine, and executive at Inner Archways LLC, presented on artificial intelligence (AI) and ChatGPT at the 2024 Society for Pediatric Dermatology Annual Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in a session titled, "Can ChatGPT Do My Job? and Other Questions for AI."

He discussed the rapid development and potential of generative AI models to assist medical professionals with tasks ranging from drafting medical necessity letters to aiding diagnoses and drug repurposing. Yan highlighted the importance of prompt engineering, such as using "chain of thought" prompts and adding "be concise" to improve AI responses.

He also addressed the issue of AI hallucinations, emphasizing the need for verification of AI-generated content. Yan mentioned the potential of ambient AI scribes to reduce physicians' documentation workload, citing a study showing significant time savings for users. He discussed the exciting advancements in AI for drug repurposing and diagnostic models for skin conditions.

For educators, Yan demonstrated how AI can simulate patient interactions to train medical students. He acknowledged the potential for AI to enhance health care but emphasized the need for human oversight to mitigate biases and ensure accuracy. Yan concluded by advocating for the adaptation and proper implementation of AI technologies to improve patient care, while highlighting the importance of human expertise in areas of uncertainty.
