Microwave device offers tx without side effects, company says

Waltham, Mass. - A new office-based, device-only treatment from WaveRx uses microwave technology to treat onychomycosis without drug toxicity and drug-associated side effects, a spokesman says.

"We feel that microwave energy is ideal, because it passes easily through the nail and also allows for controlled treatment at depths where the fungi live, which is under the nail and in the nail bed," says Anthony Tremaglio, director of marketing for WaveRx.

The device has not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is currently in clinical trials to determine optimum treatment time and number of treatments.

He says WaveRx was founded to develop a clinically proven, device-only treatment for onychomycosis that has greater efficacy than topical antifungals without the drug toxicity, interactions and side effects of systemic antifungals.
