Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Earlier Intervention Will Shape the Future of Dermatology

Justin Love, PA-C, explains how multidisciplinary care and earlier targeted therapy can improve chronic inflammatory skin disease outcomes.

As dermatology becomes increasingly integrated with rheumatology, oncology, allergy, and primary care, clinicians who build strong cross-specialty relationships will be better positioned to deliver comprehensive patient care, according to Justin Love, PA-C. Love shared his insights at the 2026 Elevate-Derm Summer Conference in San Diego, California.

Why Cross-Specialty Communication Matters in Dermatology

Love, an assistant clinical professor at Loma Linda University with 18 years of experience as a dermatology PA, said communication between specialties has evolved well beyond traditional referrals. Increasingly, clinicians develop trusted working relationships through electronic medical records, allowing clinicians who have patients with urgent concerns quicker access to specialist expertise.

"I think the more we communicate, the better acquainted we get," Love said.

He described becoming a familiar point of contact for specialists such as rheumatologists and oncologists, who often message him directly when patients require prompt dermatologic evaluation. Those relationships, he said, are built through consistent communication and a shared focus on patient care rather than specialty boundaries.

"It's about taking care of the entire patient," Love said. "At some point, they're all going to cross over and link."

Love encouraged dermatology clinicians to remain open to collaboration, noting that complex cases frequently require expertise from multiple disciplines. Developing those professional networks before challenging cases arise can improve coordination and ultimately benefit patients.

Can Earlier Targeted Therapy Modify Chronic Inflammatory Skin Disease?

Looking ahead, Love said one of the developments he is watching most closely is the possibility of true disease modification in chronic inflammatory disorders.

Rather than simply controlling symptoms, he said emerging biologics and small-molecule therapies may eventually allow clinicians to intervene earlier in the inflammatory process, potentially altering long-term disease trajectories and improving outcomes as patients age.

"I think that's what I'm probably most excited to see," Love told Dermatology Times.

He also expressed optimism that future therapies will continue to improve both efficacy and tolerability. Ideal treatments, he said, would require less laboratory monitoring, produce fewer adverse effects, and more consistently achieve outcomes that matter most to patients, including complete itch relief, skin clearance, repigmentation in vitiligo, and better control of psoriatic disease.

Looking Ahead: An Evolving and Growing Field

Compared with earlier generations of systemic therapies, today's expanding therapeutic landscape represents a significant advance, Love added. While medications such as cyclosporine and methotrexate have played important roles for selected patients, newer targeted therapies are providing clinicians with safer and more precise options than were available earlier in his career.

Reflecting on nearly 2 decades in dermatology, Love said the specialty continues to evolve rapidly, making it an exciting time for clinicians caring for patients with chronic inflammatory skin disease.
