Although public awareness surrounding sunscreen and sun safety has improved—particularly among younger generations—Suozzi noted that many patients still underutilize proven protective measures. By the time many individuals seek dermatologic care for concerns related to prior sun exposure, significant cumulative damage has already occurred. She stressed that educating children and young adults about lifelong UV protection is essential, as much of the damage that contributes to skin cancer risk later in life begins during childhood.

FDA Accepts Addition of Bemotrizinol as First New Sunscreen Ingredient in 20 Years

The FDA has approved bemotrizinol as a permitted active ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreen products, according to an agency announcement on June 9, 2026. The action marks the first addition to the OTC sunscreen monograph since the late 1990s and makes bemotrizinol the first new sunscreen active ingredient added through the streamlined administrative order process established by the CARES Act. The ingredient is approved for use in adults and children 6 months or older.

The advice is usually presented as a blanket seasonal rule—stop in May, resume in September—rather than a nuanced discussion of any single ingredient's actual photobiology. The trend has real staying power because it contains a kernel of accurate pharmacology: several of the ingredients in question genuinely do interact with light and UV exposure in measurable ways. The problem is that "interacts with light" has been flattened into "must be discontinued," when the underlying data almost universally point toward a modification of use (better sun protection, evening application, dose titration) rather than cessation.

Sun protection recommendations for patients with atopic dermatitis extend beyond UV protection alone, according to Christopher Bunick, MD, PhD. TNF Inhibitors Linked to Increased Skin Cancer Risk in Long-Term Cohort Study

Long-term tumor necrosis factor alpha inhibitor (TNF-I) therapy was associated with significantly increased risks of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma in patients with chronic inflammatory disease, according to a large retrospective cohort study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD). Investigators at Northwestern University analyzed 56,209 patients treated across dermatology, gastroenterology, and rheumatology clinics between July 1996 and January 2020, comparing 13,377 TNF-I-exposed patients with 42,832 unexposed patients. Adjusted hazard ratios ranged from 1.54 for melanoma to 1.99 for BCC.

She reassures patients that the available data continue to support sunscreen as a safe and effective tool for preventing UV-induced skin damage.
