Corte Madera, Calif. - A memorial service is planned in July for Dr. William Louis Epstein, the first chairman of the dermatology department at the University of California at San Francisco, who died May 27. He was 80.
Dr. Epstein helped to establish UCSF's melanoma clinic and was among those who studied the first patients with Kaposi's sarcoma, later found to be a harbinger of AIDS, according to the Marin Independent Journal.
He helped to establish UCSF's dermatology department in 1970, and served 15 years as its chairman. Among his many international awards, he was honored by the emperor of Japan with the Order of the Rising Sun medal in 1996 for helping to train Japanese graduate students who went on to become dermatologists in the United States and overseas.
