Take an Insta-break

Article

We all need a break sometimes, and here are some Instagram favorites that could help when you’re in need of a distraction or a little inspiration.

When you need a minute in the day to decompress, Instagram is always good for a scroll. Life isn’t all about work, but there are more than a few accounts that can satisfy a love for medicine, science, and life in general all at once. Here are a few accounts that might help you make it through the day.

@drpimplepopper

Sandra Lee, MD, FAAD, FAACS, presents the grotesquely satisfying (for some) @drpimplepopper page. Millions of followers visit her Instagram account to watch cysts, pimples, and other deeply buried abnormalities squeezed and eased out of Lee’s patients. Not for the faint of heart-or stomach-this page definitely caters to a particular audience. Approach with caution, but once you visit you might not be able to look away.

@sciencemuseum

Science Museum, the London museum that features galleries and hands-on science fun, runs this Instagram, and let’s face it, who doesn’t love a little weird science? Posts are fun and factual, with pictures and videos telling the story of the most interesting events and people from yesterday and today. Each post tells a story, from the first IVF baby to highlights from new exhibits that the museum. When you can’t get there, the museum comes to you.

@simonourianmd1

Simon Ourion, MD, a cosmetic dermatologist based in Beverly Hills, shares inspiring before and after photos of patients at his Epione laser and aesthetic surgery center in Beverly Hills. Dermatologist by trade and “sculptor by avocation,” Ourion uses his account to highlight the progress his patients-including some celebrities-make through surgery, laser treatments, and his signature skincare line.

@Medjobbers

Anyone who works in the medical field knows how rewarding it can be, but also how challenging. A little humor can go a long way in pushing caregivers through the day, and @medjobbers offers that and more. Run by the medical career company, MedJobbers, this Instagram account offers memes that help medical professionals realize that they are not alone when it comes to the sick, tired feeling after a 12-hour shift, the feeling of thanklessness that sometimes comes with taking care of other humans, or the overwhelming sense of satisfaction it can provide at other times. No matter what your role or specialty, a quick visit is sure to put a smile on your face.

@derm.talk

Jenny Liu, MD, a board-certified dermatologist from the Twin Cities offers a great example of how a physician can live a life of many interests. Her blog and Instagram account cover a variety of topics from hair, nails, skin (of course), fashion, marriage, families, and everything else life as to offer. From her adorable baby to what it takes to make a marriage in medicine work, Liu’s media accounts illustrate that no one is just a physician, but so much more.

@dr_ellen_marmur

Ellen Marmur, MD, FAAD, is a New York City dermatologist with her own mask and skincare line, but her Instagram account doesn’t stop there. From highlighting innovative procedures and the success of her products, to chronicling beach trips and jumping out of planes, Marmur is another physician who shows her visitors that life is more than clinic time and patient visits.

@elvisfrancois

While skincare might not be his first line of business, Elvis Francois, MD, and orthopedic surgery resident at the Mayo Clinic, definitely knows how to keep things smooth. The singing surgeon has been featured on national media and television shows for the beautiful music he makes to blow off steam or help his patients, and may inspire you to hum a tune during your next procedure.
