Planning ahead for EHR system helps to avoid pitfalls

Achieving meaningful use and avoiding common mistakes in implementing an electronic health record (EHR) system require careful planning and learning from others' experiences, said Michael Doyle, chairman of Medsphere Systems Corporation, at the 70th annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Medsphere Systems Corporation, Carlsbad, Calif., developed and supports the OpenVista EHR, an open-source healthcare IT platform derived from the VistA system developed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Mr. Doyle says dermatology is somewhat unique among medical specialties in that it relies heavily on images, and dermatologists tend to see a high number of patients for fairly quick episodes of care.
