New data questions number of nevi as increased risk factor for development of malignant melanoma

Washington -The number of benign-appearing nevi is currently considered to be the most important risk factor for the development of malignant melanoma. However, data presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology demonstrated no increased risk of malignant melanoma with increasing numbers of nevi in a high-risk group of patients presenting to the melanoma center at Washington Hospital Center.
