Galderma recently presented the latest findings from its phase 3b RELAX clinical trial at the International Master Course on Aging Science in Paris, France. The results reaffirm the robust efficacy, rapid onset, and extended duration of aesthetic improvements achieved with a single treatment of RelabotulinumtoxinA (Relfydess) for moderate to severe glabellar lines.

Combining Minoxidil and LLLT Does Not Improve Treatment Outcomes for Androgenic Alopecia

A recent systemic review and meta-analysis compared minoxidil alone to minoxidil and low-level laser therapy for the treatment of androgenic alopecia. It was found that LLLT, which uses wavelengths of red or near-infrared light, does not increase the effectiveness of minoxidil treatment.

Looking Ahead to SBS with Glynis Ablon, MD

“I love sharing and exchanging information,” Ablon said. “I think it’s part of how we learn and grow as physicians,” said Glynis Ablon, MD, on the 2025 South Beach Symposium.

 spoke with Ablon, a board-certified dermatologist, associate clinical professor at UCLA, SBS advisory board member, and owner of the 

 and Research Center in Manhattan Beach, California. Ablon will be presenting on numerous panels, including, “Getting Involved in Clinical Trials,” “Nutraceuticals, Supplements, and More,” and “Complications in Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Procedures.”

“I’ve been doing this now for 15 years at South Beach Symposium, and I learned something new every single time,” Ablon said. “My dad always said, ‘all you need is one new thing,’ so I think the talks really do become more advanced.”

A few names that Ablon was excited to see on the list were Valerie Callender, MD, Brett King, MD, PhD, and of course Christopher Bunick, MD, PhD, medical dermatology chair of SBS and editor-in-chief of 

.“I hate saying even a few names because there's so many people that I admire,” Ablon said. “I always learn new information from every time I see them on the podium.”

The South Beach Symposium 2025 is set to begin, featuring prominent dermatologists like Glynis Ablon, MD, who will present on various panels, including clinical trials and minimally invasive aesthetic procedures. Ablon, a seasoned participant, values the symposium for its advanced discussions and learning opportunities. She anticipates insights from esteemed colleagues such as Valerie Callender, Brett King, and Christopher Bunick. Noteworthy sessions include topics on hair, JAKs and TYKs, and cutaneous oncology. In an interview ahead of the main event, Ablon shared her excitement for SBS and listening in on presentations from industry leaders.

The Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types (FIRST) announced it is now accepting 

letters of intent (LOI) for its 2025 Research Grant Program

. According to FIRST, research with “promising LOI” will be asked to complete a full application consisting of a 5-page narrative. Awarded grants include the pilot and research grants.

Pilot grants include up to $15,000 for one year, are not renewable, and support the creation of new ideas for study and simple projects that provide definitive information within 1 year. Research grants include up to $50,000 for one year with the opportunity for a second year of funding based on the demonstration of progress and availability of funds. The research grants should lead to ongoing, self-supporting programs in ichthyosis research.

FIRST’s Research Review Committee will review all LOIs (1 page maximum), and investigators will be notified if they are invited to submit a full proposal.

April 18, 2025 - Letters of intent are due to FIRST

May 9, 2025 - Invitation to submit full application emailed to the investigator

June 20, 2025 - Full grant application due to FIRST

"I am a former recipient of a research grant from the Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types. This grant was instrumental in my early independent research career for advancing my keratin and intermediate filament research program. FIRST funding helped my lab generate data central to future NIH R01 funding. I strongly encourage researchers at any stage of their career to apply for this award," said Christopher Bunick, MD, PhD, associate professor of dermatology and translational biomedicine at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, 

’ 2025 editor in chief, and a member of FIRST's Medical and Scientific Advisory Board and Research Grant Committee. 

Research for both grants should include focused basic science projects addressing keratinocyte biology and differentiation, genetics, biology of skin inflammation, itch, or other ichthyosis-related areas. FIRST also encourages clinical research that addresses improving diagnosis and/or quality of life, defining quality of life measures, expanding knowledge about topical or systemic treatments, or specific aspects of the disease.

FIRST conducted surveys of the icthyosis community and specifically patients and their families that revealed research is a top priority for funds donated to the foundation. Based on the responses, FIRST launched an expanded program to support promising research initiatives led by investigators with new or established interests in ichthyosis.

The FIRST research grant program was founded in 2006 to encourage and support investigation into causes, treatments, and potential cures for ichthyosis. The overall foundation is celebrating its 40th year of supporting patients and their families and has provided over $117,000 in scholarships to patients, approximately $53,000 in financial aid for skin care, enrolled 1600 families in the Ichthyosis Registry at Yale, and discovered 8 new genetic causes of ichthyosis. FIRST’s Medical & Scientific Advisory Board and Board of Directors work to support patients and their families through programs, services, and technology resources.

"There are numerous avenues of unanswered questions related to ichthyosis and other epidermal differentiation disorders that this funding can help spur, including the nature of their inflammatory pathophysiology.
