Santa Monica, Calif. - Fifty years of medical studies show that sun exposure is a primary component in the development of melanoma, according to the April issue of Dermatologic Surgery.

While it is unclear what pattern of sun exposure is linked to melanoma, or whether that exposure is short, intense intermittent or cumulative, the sun acts as an initiating and promoting agent and causes immunosuppression, researchers say.
