The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) discusses three steps MD's should take before ordering antibiotics, featuring speaker Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, Director for the CDC. The steps include:

  • Ordering recommended cultures before antibiotics are given, and starting drugs promptly.

  • Making sure the indication, dose, and expected duration are specified in the patient record.

  • Reassessing within 48 hours based on test results and patient status, adjusting or stopping the prescription if necessary.
