Rare Disease Day, founded in 2008, is an annual global observance on the last day of February. Because 2024 is a leap year, Rare Disease Day falls on Thursday, February 29, the “rarest” day of the year. Rare diseases are estimated to affect about 300 million people around the world, according to the National Organization for Rare Disorders website, https://www.rarediseaseday.org, and of the 7000 known rare diseases, approximately 95% have no treatment.1
