Pointers With Portela: Effects of Hormone Changes on the Skin

News
Article

In this week’s Pointers With Portela, the 208SkinDoc reviews how the skin is affected during hormonal changes and menopause.

Dustin Portela, DO, a board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon at Treasure Valley Dermatology in Boise, Idaho, discusses how skin, specifically women’s, is affected by hormonal changes and menopause in one of his most recent YouTube episodes, " Hormone Changes & Menopause Effect on the Skin."

In this episode, Portela explains how declining estrogen and progesterone levels significantly impact skin health, leading to dryness, loss of elasticity, and wrinkles. To better support menopausal skin, Portela recommends prioritizing hydration, collagen support, sun protection, and gentle skin care routines.

“There are all kinds of changes that happen to us as we age, especially as women go through perimenopause and menopause...Estrogen and progesterone are one of the things that help our skin in stimulating oil production, and our oil production tends to drop as we age, so the skin can start to feel dry, dull, flaky, or just have this overall itchy feeling all over this skin,” said Portela.
