Radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinomas

Video

A study published in the journal of Dermatologic Therapy examined the results of radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinomas of the skin. The aim of the study was to find differentiators in the 153 patients with non-melanoma skin cancer treated with radiotherapy between 1996 and 2018. Of the patients, 95 were men and 58 were women ages 44-93.

The results
Cosmetic outcomes were good in 29% of patients, fair in 50% and poor in 21%. The three year loco-regional control relapse-free survival and overall survival rates were 88%, but the male group received significantly worse prognosis than the female group.

The conclusion
The authors concluded radiotherapy plays an integral role in the treatment of primary and postoperative squamous cell carcinoma.

Given the data in this study, would you recommend radiotherapy for both your male and female patients, or something else?
